DEREK
TAYLOR , OBE, MA (Cantab)
will discuss:
‘Don Pacifico – the Truth after
150 Years’
In 1850 Palmerston sent 13
warships to blockade Greece and obtain compensation for a Gibraltan Jew
whose house had been looted. Why ? Derek Taylor’s Don Pacifico:
The Acceptable Face of Gunboat Diplomacy – (Vallentine Mitchell Pb £19-95)
sheds new light on a fascinating episode of nineteenth-century European
history.
The President of the Jewish community in Athens, Don
Pacifico’s house was looted by a mob in April 1847 as police stood by and
watched. The riot was government-inspired and the courts were crooked.
There was little chance of getting the large compensation Pacifico claimed
- until Palmerston, the British Foreign Secretary, became involved in a
piece of gunboat diplomacy. The author has unearthed a wealth of new and
surprising information which finally shows Pacifico to be a victim of
prejudice rather than a conman.
Derek Taylor is also the author of ‘British
Chief Rabbis 1664-2006’ (Pb, 19-95), and co-author with Greville
Janner of the forthcoming
‘Jewish Parliamentarians’
